Where is Grosse Ile?

Located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit and at the mouth of Lake Erie, Grosse Ile is the largest island in the Detroit River and the most populated island in the state of Michigan (population 10,777 in 2020 Census). Named by French explorers in 1679, Grosse Ile means “Large Island.”While the island has its own school system, five churches, police department, volunteer fire department, grocery, drugstore, gas stations, municipal airport and several businesses/restaurants, the natural setting has been retained and protected with open greenspace—where wildlife flourishes and residents have the opportunity to walk and bike on paths maintained by the Township. Boating, fishing and golfing are accessible through multiple boat clubs and golf courses on Grosse Ile.

Two bridges connect Grosse Ile to the Michigan mainland; to the east, Canada is directly across the Detroit River and visible from the island. Grosse Ile has a rich 250+ year history and has numerous sites designated by the National Register of Historic Places as having historical significance. The automotive industry has a substantial influence on Grosse Ile due to its proximity to Detroit.

Grosse Ile has frequently been identified as one of Michigan's safest communities and has an excellent public school system.

Where is Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church?

Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church (GIPC) is on the north end of Grosse Ile at 7925 Horsemill Road, conveniently located near primary access roads, yet situated in a lovely area with woods directly behind and across from our property. Although the church is located on the island, the congregation represents many Downriver communities such as Trenton, Wyandotte, Riverview, Woodhaven and others. This widespread footprint allows the opportunity to become involved in multiple community events, thereby increasing moments to share God’s Word with others.
